Information Links

We realize there are many guides to the internet that are more complete than we can hope to be. We have listed below, however, some sites that we have found particularly valuable or intriguing in our own quests. Of course, we would be amiss if we did not list other sites of RDG Services that you may find useful.

Web Search Services
  1. Power Reporting. An exceptionally complete listing of links to just about everything (set up originally for reporters).
  2. Reference Desk. A competitor to the above, it bills itself as the "single best source for facts on the web"
  3. Academic Information. This directory by academic subject seems to be a project closely related to the Unversity of Washington. Don't be put off by the opening page.
  4. Google. Still the best of the general search engines.
  5. Alltheweb.com. An excellent search engine, particularly good for looking at all the pages in a web site. (Enter "url.all:" plus the short form www url address.) It also includes an excellent science search engine (which can be useful for not-so-scientific searches as well).
  6. Internet Web Directory This is a fast growing directory of web sites. Fully searchable and updated regularly.
  7. Copernic.com. This is an excellent search engine of search engines much used by libraries. Best feature, maintaining a good record of where you have been in past searches. To use it you will need to go to www.copernic.com (the link here), and then click on "desktop" for the page you want. This gives you a choice of downloads before you can use it. If you want, the free version is quite usable and the download painless.
  8. E-Library. Offers access to a wide variety of books and articles, as well as pictures and other materials.
Encyclopedias
  1. Encyclopedia Britannica. Still the best encyclopedia. Although full use of the Britannica requires a "subscription", you can still get some good answers without it.
  2. Wikepedia. This new encyclopedia written entirely for the internet is especially useful for new concepts and more recent events.
  3. 1upInfo. Offers information on the widest variety of topics in encyclopedic style.
Dictionary and Thesauri Links
  1. Web Thesaurus Compendium - Indexed A list, with short descriptions, of a variety of both general and specialized thesauri.
  2. Lexical Free Net This is a "connected thesaurus" that explores the relationships of words is many useful ways.
  3. Merriam-Webster OnLine The American standard dictionary. The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is much more complete and historical, but online access is fairly expensive.
  4. One Look This is a dictionary search tool that looks through hundreds of dictionaries on the web (supposedly) whenever you query. Try it; I found it disappointing.
  5. WordNet. This is a lexical project of Princeton University. Use "WordNet online" to access a word search complementary to Merriam-Webster. Very good on synonyms.
  6. PC Webopedia - Computer Dictionary
Expert Answering Services
  1. Ask an Expert Sources . This offers a wide variety of different expert services. Unfortunately, many of the links are old. The site appears not to be have been kept up. A pity.
  2. All Experts.com I have found this the most useful and comprehensive answering service on the web. They have panels of experts for a wide variety of topics. Their answers are given quickly, authoritatively, and freely.
  3. Ask Jeeves. An excellent source of information as well as a standard search engine. From the home page, ask, for example, "Cambodia's capital". You will be offered a menu of places to go for the history of Cambodia, for an encyclopedia article, for tourism in Cambodia. Only if you pass these choices, will you be offered the general unassimilated listing of links.
